  • At Drury Chiropractic, we help people understand and manage common issues such as back pain, neck pain, headaches, posture-related tension, spinal discomfort, and movement restrictions.
  • Many people are unsure whether their symptoms are muscular, postural, nerve-related, or connected to the spine. Others simply want to know whether chiropractic care is appropriate, safe, or covered by ACC in New Zealand.
  • This page answers some of the most common questions people ask before seeing a chiropractor, including:
  • How to know when pain may need professional assessment
  • What chiropractors actually do
  • The difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy
  • What to expect during your first appointment
  • And whether chiropractic care may help with ongoing spinal or posture-related problems
Our approach focuses on assessing spinal movement, nervous system function, posture, and overall mobility to help people move more comfortably and function at their best. We provide gentle chiropractic care for individuals and families across Drury, Karaka, Papakura, Pukekohe, and surrounding South Auckland areas.

How do I know if my back or neck pain is something I should be concerned about?
  • Back pain and neck pain can be a normal bodily process, designed to help protect us from doing something that may be dangerous. It’s incredibly common, but that does not mean you should ignore it, especially if it is ongoing, worsening, or starting to affect your daily life. More than one third of people with chronic pain become disabled by their pain to some degree, making low back pain the leading cause of disability worldwide.
  • If your pain has lasted longer than a few weeks, keeps returning, is affecting your sleep or movement, or you are relying on medication to manage it, it may be time to have it professionally assessed.
  • You should also seek advice if you are experiencing:
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pain radiating into the arms or legs
  • Reduced strength
  • Persistent headaches
  • Or significant stiffness and loss of movement
Research shows that addressing spinal and movement-related issues earlier often leads to better long-term outcomes. Chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal movement, posture, nervous system function, and overall mobility to help people move and feel better.
Is my pain muscular, postural, or something related to my spine?
Many people with ongoing neck pain, back pain, tension headaches, or stiffness are often dealing with a combination of posture-related strain, muscle tension, reduced spinal movement, and nervous system irritation. Poor posture, repetitive movements, stress, sedentary work, and previous injuries can all contribute to changes in how the spine and surrounding muscles move and function. This may change the way your brain senses what is going on in your back, and may perceive pain. Our spine and postural muscles are often tight as a result of how our spine is moving, and not the other way around. At Drury Chiropractic, we assess how your spine moves, how your posture may be contributing to strain, and whether movement restrictions could be playing a role in your symptoms. If the pain has been ongoing for more than three months, then there is a good chance that your pain is unrelated to tissue damage.
How do I know if I should see a chiropractor?
The best way to know whether chiropractic care may help you is to have your spine, posture, and movement properly assessed. Many people come to us after living with recurring back pain, neck pain, headaches, stiffness, tension, or reduced movement for months, assuming it is “just normal” or something they have to put up with. Research continues to show that improving spinal function and movement may help support better mobility, sleep, physical comfort, and overall wellbeing. Many patients also report feeling less tension, moving more freely, and functioning better in day-to-day life after beginning chiropractic care. If your symptoms keep returning, have been ongoing for more than 3 months, or are starting to affect your daily life, work, exercise, sleep, or ability to move comfortably, it may be a sign that your spine and nervous system are not functioning as well as they could be. You do not need to wait until things become severe before seeking help. Booking a consultation at Drury Chiropractic can help you better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for you.
What does a chiropractor actually do to help with pain and movement?
  • Chiropractors are university-trained healthcare professionals who study for 5 years, learning how to assess, diagnose, and manage conditions relating to the spine, joints, muscles, posture, and nervous system.
  • At Drury Chiropractic, we begin with a detailed history and physical assessment to better understand what may be contributing to your pain, stiffness, headaches, posture-related tension, or movement restrictions. If needed, we can also refer to imaging such as X-rays to ensure care is safe and appropriate for your situation.
  • All of this information helps us assess how your spine and nervous system are functioning, and identify areas of the spine that may be stiff, restricted, or not moving well.
  • Research suggests chiropractors are particularly skilled at identifying restricted spinal segments and changes in movement patterns within the spine. Chiropractic adjustments are designed to help restore healthier movement, improve mobility, reduce tension, and support better overall spinal function.
  • Studies have also shown that spinal movement and nervous system function are closely connected. Improving movement within the spine may help the body better coordinate posture, balance, movement, and muscle control.
  • Many people seek chiropractic care for:
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Posture-related tension
  • Stiffness
  • Sports-related strain
  • And recurring movement issues
The goal is to help people move more comfortably, function better, and feel more confident in their body over time.
Is chiropractic care safe for back pain, neck pain, and headaches?
Like all forms of healthcare, chiropractic care carries some level of risk, however serious complications are considered rare. A thorough assessment is always performed before treatment to help assess for any risk that may be associated with potential adverse reactions and to identify any factors that may require modifications, further investigation, or referral. Some people may experience mild temporary soreness or stiffness after an adjustment, similar to how you might feel after exercise or starting a new activity. At Drury Chiropractic, care is tailored to the individual, with techniques selected based on your age, health history, symptoms, and comfort level.
Who is chiropractic care suitable for?
  • Chiropractic care may be suitable for people at many different stages of life, including adults, older adults, pregnant women, teenagers, children, babies and families seeking support with posture, movement, and spinal health.
  • People commonly seek chiropractic care for:
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Posture-related tension
  • Movement restrictions
  • General spinal discomfort
If your symptoms appear more serious or outside the scope of chiropractic care, we will always recommend appropriate medical assessment or referral when needed.
What's the difference between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?
Chiropractors and physiotherapists both work with musculoskeletal conditions and there can be overlap in the types of problems they help people manage. Generally speaking, physiotherapists often focus more on injury rehabilitation, muscle strengthening, and exercise-based recovery, while chiropractors place additional focus on spinal movement, joint function, posture, and nervous system function. Both professions can play an important role depending on the individual and their goals. Chiropractors specialise on assessing how the spine and nervous system are functioning, and how movement restrictions or posture-related issues may be contributing to pain, stiffness, headaches, or reduced mobility. If you want a detailed analysis of your spine, posture, and nervous system function, then book a consultation here.
Is chiropractic care covered by ACC in New Zealand?
Yes, if your condition is injury-related and eligible for ACC, we can usually lodge your ACC claim directly from the clinic, with no referral required. ACC may help subsidise up to 16 visits of chiropractic visits, depending on your situation and claim approval you may be able to apply for extensions on that if required.. If you are unsure whether your injury may be covered, we are happy to talk you through the process.
What happens during your first chiropractic visit?
Your first appointment is focused on getting a clear understanding of your health history, symptoms, posture, movement, and overall spinal function. We take the time to perform a thorough physical examination to assess how your spine and nervous system are functioning and identify any areas that may be contributing to your concerns. If needed, we may recommend further assessment such as X-rays to ensure care is safe and appropriate for your situation. Once we have gathered the necessary information, we will explain our findings, answer any questions you may have, and discuss the most appropriate care plan for you. Some patients may receive treatment during the first visit, while others may begin care at a follow-up appointment depending on their individual needs.
When should I stop waiting, and actually see a chiropractor?
If your back pain, neck pain, headaches, posture-related tension, or stiffness keeps returning, is limiting your movement, or is beginning to affect your daily life, it may be worth having it assessed rather than continuing to wait for it to settle on its own. Many people delay seeking care because they assume the problem will eventually improve, only to find the symptoms continue to return over time. You do not need to be in severe pain to benefit from having your spine, posture, and movement checked. If something does not feel right, or your symptoms are not improving the way you would expect, getting professional advice can help you better understand what is going on and what your options may be.
